Famous Projects: Eiffel Tower

The Eiffel Tower is an iron lattice tower located on the Champ de Mars in Paris, France. It was named after the engineer Alexandre Gustave Eiffel, whose company designed and built the tower. Erected in 1889 as the entrance arch to the 1889 World's Fair, it was initially criticized by some of France's leading artists and intellectuals for its design, but has become both a global cultural icon of France and one of the most recognizable structures in the world. The tower is the tallest structure in Paris and the most-visited paid monument in the world; 6.98 million people ascended it in 2011. The tower received its 250 millionth visitor in 2010.

The tower is 1,063 ft tall, about the same height as an 81-storey building. Its base is square, 410 feet on a side. During its construction, the Eiffel Tower surpassed the Washington Monument to assume the title of the tallest man-made structure in the world, a title it held for 41 years, until the Chrysler Building in New York City was built in 1930. Because of the addition of the aerial atop the Eiffel Tower in 1957, it is now taller than the Chrysler Building by 17 feet. Not including broadcast aerials, it is the second-tallest structure in France, after the Millau Viaduct.

The tower has three levels for visitors, with restaurants on the first and second. The third level observatory's upper platform is 276 m (906 ft) above the ground, the highest accessible to the public in the European Union. Tickets can be purchased to ascend by stairs or elevator to the first and second levels. The climb from ground level to the first level is over 300 steps, as is the walk from the first to the second level. Although there are stairs to the third and highest level, these are usually closed to the public and it is generally only accessible by lift.

The design of the Eiffel Tower was originated by Maurice Koechlin and Émile Nouguier, two senior engineers who worked for the Compagnie des Établissements Eiffel, after discussion about a suitable centrepiece for the proposed 1889 Exposition Universelle, a World's Fair which would celebrate the centennial of the French Revolution. In May 1884 Koechlin, working at home, made an outline drawing of their scheme, described by him as "a great pylon, consisting of four lattice girders standing apart at the base and coming together at the top, joined together by metal trusses at regular intervals". Initially Eiffel himself showed little enthusiasm, but he did sanction further study of the project, and the two engineers then asked Stephen Sauvestre, the head of company's architectural department, to contribute to the design. Sauvestre added decorative arches to the base, a glass pavilion to the first level, and other embellishments.

This enhanced version gained Eiffel's support: he bought the rights to the patent on the design which Koechlin, Nougier, and Sauvestre had taken out, and the design was exhibited at the Exhibition of Decorative Arts in the autumn of 1884 under the company name. On 30 March 1885 Eiffel presented a paper on the project to the Société des Ingénieurs Civils; after discussing the technical problems and emphasising the practical uses of the tower, he finished his talk by saying that the tower would symbolize.

"not only the art of the modern engineer, but also the century of Industry and Science in which we are living, and for which the way was prepared by the great scientific movement of the eighteenth century and by the Revolution of 1789, to which this monument will be built as an expression of France's gratitude."

Our ITIL Certification Materials

Our course materials have been designed by a panel of ITIL experts with more than 15 years of industry experience in IT Service Management. MyITstudy has created a time-tested methodology, which is backed by high pass rates. We provide students with all the materials they need, including workbooks, chapter test books, a final test booklet, process charts, case studies and gift packs. The study material details the goals, objectives and basic concepts of core ITIL processes and functions everything students need to know to pass the exam. It seamlessly combines real-life examples with ITIL concepts to help students effectively implement ITIL concepts in their organizations. One of the major benefits MyITstudy offers students is one month of free access to online study materials, which includes process charts, study guides and exam tips.

Students do not have to bring anything to class. All materials are provided!

Student Workbook:

MyITstudy course content has been updated to align with the 2011 syllabus. The workbook contains an introduction along with chapters detailing each stage of the Service Lifecycle:

    Service Strategy,
    Service Design,
    Service Transition,
    Service Operation and
    Continual Service improvement.

The purpose, value, scope and objectives of each process and function as well as ITIL terminology is explained in detail. This workbook contains simple, yet informative, real-life situations that help students contextualize important ITIL concepts. Each chapter is complemented by a brief chapter test that reinforces retention and application of important concepts.

Chapter Test Workbook:

Students can discuss important concepts during the interactive session after each chapter while they are given feedback on areas of improvement. The chapter test workbook also contains justifications for all the chapter test questions to help students understand each concept.

Mock Exam:

This exam has been modelled after the ITIL Foundation Exam.
The mock test is conducted on the second day of class, prior to the actual ITIL Foundation exam. It consists of 40 questions that mimic the type of questions students will see on the real exam. It helps students prepare for the final exam and assists them in understanding their strengths and weaknesses.

Case Study:

Implementing the ITIL framework is as necessary as the knowledge of ITIL concepts is, in creating a successful organization. MyITstudy understands this reality and has prepared case studies based on real-life experiences, which offers a balance between theoretical concepts and implementable knowledge of the ITIL framework. A service topic is chosen and is explained with reference to each component of the Service Lifecycle in ITIL Foundation. With this method, students can get an idea of how to formulate an ITIL culture in their respective organizations to improve service delivery and productivity.

Are You Considering A Career In ITSM?

Are you considering a career in ITSM (Information Technology Service Management)? You do realize that you will be doomed to receive that glassy-eyed stare from people at social events when you admit that you work in “IT”? The ones that don’t make some excuse to answer a phone call, go to the bathroom or get another drink, will hang around because they want to ask you how to get rid of a problem on their home or business computer or tablet.

Take the normal “entry-level” service desk analyst (operator, technician or whatever your business decides to call them). In a large operation this person may only need to have a great phone manner, the ability to follow a script (although I really hate these!), listen to what the customer is saying and then log and categorize a call appropriately. They will need to be able to know the difference between a service request and an incident, hardware and software, and understand which services a customer is talking about. Most service desk tools will take care of everything else for them, assigning to the right team or agent.

If you are going to move out of the Service Desk arena, there are basically two ways to head. If you have more of a more technical bent, then you are most likely to head to infrastructure, network administration, database manager roles and the like. The rest of this article is probably not so much for you!

ITIL and other best practice frameworks give a multitude of career paths to choose from for people wanting to pursue a career in ITSM. At a practitioner level, larger organizations will have full-time roles for change managers, configuration manager, problem managers, incident managers…even knowledge managers (a neglected role, in my personal opinion) and other specific ITIL roles. The world really is your oyster. Smaller organizations may bundle roles together into broader service manager roles.

There are also fantastic opportunities for ITSM specialists with vendor companies, think about it, you get the chance to get into a business, work with them to improve their ITSM practices and then move on to the next site. There is a great sense of achievement in this sort of role. If you are like the rest of us, you like a challenge and this career is where you can get it.

Our ITIL® Foundation Certificate Course has been prepared to help you achieve this within your work schedule. This course has been designed with your success in mind.

If you’d like to know more about The ITIL® Foundation Certificate, go to www.leapuniversity.biz for information.

Do You Need The ITIL Foundation Certificate?

Our ITIL® Foundation Certificate is a three day course in which delegates will gain a comprehensive grounding in the aspects of ITIL® service management. Delegates will prepare for and sit the one hour, multiple- choice ITIL® Foundation certificate in service management exam. The course consists of short lectures, exercises, discussions, examination technique training, mock examinations and culminates in an invigilated exam on the third day.

Effective and formal IT Service Management will give an organization a clear view of its IT capabilities. It will give the IT department a clear understanding of the customer’s needs, drivers and motivation. The interlocking IT Service Management disciplines will allow the needs of the customer to be matched by the capability of the services being offered.

In documenting best practice ITIL has laid before us a professional approach to the provision of IT services. In the ITIL world measurement and monitoring are critical. We are able to focus on the needs of the business and to measure the performance of the services offered, reviewing and improving on a continual basis.

Critical among costs the Service Management disciplines is Availability Management. If services are not available then it’s not a service. All the service support and service delivery disciplines work together to deliver agreed levels of service availability to our customers.

Delivery of service availability to meet customer needs benefits the whole organization. Customer satisfaction is greatly increased, as is the motivation of those staff involved in service provision.

Overall, professional IT Service Management disciplines will deliver improved quality of service to customers enabling the business to reduce costs, derive higher revenues and hence increased profit.

This course leads to the ITIL® Foundation level certification. Delegates are prepared for the Foundation examination and will normally take this examination on the third day of the course. The Foundation qualification is a pre-requisite for the ITIL Intermediate examinations.

Was The Manhattan Project The Ultimate In Project Management?

Is “Was The Manhattan Project The Ultimate In Project Management” a fair question? It was certainly one of the largest and most complex in history. What do you think?

The Manhattan Project was a research and development project that produced the first nuclear weapons during World War II. It was led by the United States with the support of the United Kingdom and Canada. From 1942 to 1946, the project was under the direction of Major General Leslie Groves of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers; physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer was the director of the Los Alamos National Laboratory that designed the actual bombs. The Army component of the project was designated the Manhattan District; "Manhattan" gradually superseded the official codename, Development of Substitute Materials, for the entire project. Along the way, the project absorbed its earlier British counterpart, Tube Alloys. The Manhattan Project began modestly in 1939, but grew to employ more than 130,000 people and cost nearly US$2 billion (about $26 billion in 2015[1] dollars). Over 90% of the cost was for building factories and producing the fissile materials, with less than 10% for development and production of the weapons. Research and production took place at more than 30 sites across the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada.

Two types of atomic bomb were developed during the war. A relatively simple gun-type fission weapon was made using uranium-235, an isotope that makes up only 0.7 percent of natural uranium. Since it is chemically identical to the most common isotope, uranium-238, and has almost the same mass, it proved difficult to separate. Three methods were employed for uranium enrichment: electromagnetic, gaseous and thermal. Most of this work was performed at Oak Ridge, Tennessee. In parallel with the work on uranium was an effort to produce plutonium. Reactors were constructed at Oak Ridge and Hanford, Washington, in which uranium was irradiated and transmuted into plutonium. The plutonium was then chemically separated from the uranium. The gun-type design proved impractical to use with plutonium so a more complex implosion-type weapon was developed in a concerted design and construction effort at the project's principal research and design laboratory in Los Alamos, New Mexico.

The project was also charged with gathering intelligence on the German nuclear weapon project. Through Operation Alsos, Manhattan Project personnel served in Europe, sometimes behind enemy lines, where they gathered nuclear materials and documents, and rounded up German scientists. Despite the Manhattan Project's tight security, Soviet atomic spies still penetrated the program.

The first nuclear device ever detonated was an implosion-type bomb at the Trinity test, conducted at New Mexico's Alamogordo Bombing and Gunnery Range on 16 July 1945. Little Boy, a gun-type weapon, and Fat Man, an implosion-type weapon, were used in the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, respectively. In the immediate postwar years, the Manhattan Project conducted weapons testing at Bikini Atoll as part of Operation Crossroads, developed new weapons, promoted the development of the network of national laboratories, supported medical research into radiology and laid the foundations for the nuclear navy. It maintained control over American atomic weapons research and production until the formation of the United States Atomic Energy Commission in January 1947.

Does Education and Job Security Go Hand In Hand?

Studies show that persons with higher education tend to have greater job security.  Does that mean the person stays with the same company year after year? Actually it doesn’t but it means that they have the longest continuous month to month employment records. For the purposes of this blog we are going to look specifically at those holding the PMI Project Management Professional Certification.

As a program manager, you’re a senior-level practitioner on the forefront of advancing your organization’s strategic goals. You manage multiple, related projects in a coordinated way, achieving benefits that could not occur if the projects were handled separately.

Your leadership is instrumental. With program management maturity, an organization’s projects are far more successful than without it — 76 percent compared to 54 percent according to our 2015 Pulse of the Profession® report. The Program Management Professional is a visible sign of your advanced experience and skill and gives you a distinct advantage in employment and promotion.

If you have the proven ability to manage multiple, related projects and navigate complex activities that span functions, organizations, regions or cultures and to align results with organizational goals, then you’re a potential PMP.

PMI maintains an up-to-date registry of individuals who have earned one of its credentials. To verify credential holders status, simply enter an individual's last name/surname in the search field and a list of matches will be displayed. Make sure you have the correct spelling and full name for the credential holder you wish to find.

Studies Found:
Overwhelmingly, high-wage states are states with a well-educated workforce. There is a clear and strong correlation between the educational attainment of a state’s workforce and median wages in the state.

Investing in education is also good for state budgets in the long run, since workers with higher incomes contribute more through taxes over the course of their lifetimes.

Looking At Project Management

For the purposes of this blog, there is an important distinction to be drawn between projects: "a temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product, service or result" and project management or at least the profession and practice of ‘modern project management’ as it is embodied in the various project management associations around the world. In this context, ‘modern project management’ is a phrase used at Leap University and others to describe the management of projects in the way described by organizations such as the PMI in their respective ‘body of knowledge’ both current and former.

Starting with the industrial revolution, management science evolved through the 19th and 20th centuries, and various processes, tools and techniques were developed to help identify and control business functions. Some of these tools directly related to the future of project management.

The first ‘project’ to add science to the process of time control was undertaken by Kelley and Walker for E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Company. The meeting that approved the funding for this project was held in Newark, Delaware, USA on the 7th May 1957 and as they say, the rest is history. In 1956 Kelly and Walker had started developing the algorithms that became the ‘Activity-on-Arrow’ or ADM method of critical path scheduling after approval of funding for the development project. The computer program they developed was tested on plant shutdowns in 1957 and the first paper discussing the critical path method (CPM) of scheduling was published in March 1959.

These developments were closely followed by the development of the PERT system. The US Air Force translated PERT into PEP (Program Evaluation Procedure) and a host of similar systems appeared over the next few years.  While CPM and PERT use the same basic approach, including the Activity-on-Arrow network diagram, PERT focused on time as the key variable (what varied was the probability of hitting a milestone or completion date) where CPM ‘fixed’ time and the cost of achieving the target time varied.  The cost variable component of CPM quickly faded from use.  The time variable PERT approach lasted longer and was eventually replaced by the more accurate Monte Carlo analysis. Modern tools based on the Monte Carlo approach such as Pertmaster are capable of calculating time and cost variables at the same time.

You Need Project Management Professional Certification

I think it may be safe to say that if you know what PMP stands for, Project Management Professional Certification, then you are already certified or you know you need to be certified to advance your career and boost your income.

Are you one of those unfortunate enough to have had your career stalled, or even ended because you lack the PMP certification? Is now the time to begin to pick and choose where and how to gain your PMP Certification?

Do you need to convert your project management capability into a true competitive advantage that will allow you to further your career goals? As you probably already know, Project Management Professional Certification is a job requirement with many firms.

If you need some background information that will help you understand PMP let’s start with this simple description:

Project Management Professional (PMP) is an internationally recognized professional designation offered by the Project Management Institute (PMI). There are currently 658,523 active PMP certified individuals and 274 chartered chapters across 204 countries and territories worldwide. The certification exam is based on the PMI Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK). Other requirements include a bachelor's degree, at least 4,500 hours of experience leading and directing projects, and 35 hours of formal project management education. A candidate who passes the exam and meets the other professional requirements is awarded the PMP certification.

How does getting your PMP Certification rank with those that follow IT careers?  Government, commercial and other organizations employ PMP certified project managers in an attempt to improve the success rate of projects in all areas of knowledge, by applying a standardized and evolving set of project management principles as contained in PMI's PMBOK Guide.

In December 2005, the PMP credential was tied for fourth place in CertCities.com’s 10 Hottest Certifications for 2006, and in December 2008, it was number 7 of ZDNet’s 10 best IT certifications. More recently, in 2012 and 2013, the PMP credential has been ranked as a top certification by CIO and Global Knowledge.

For 2014, the PMP certification was rated #1 most valuable by IT Career Finder in their "Top 10 Highest Paying IT Certifications for 2014" Outside of IT, the PMP ranked #5 with Global Knowledge "15 Top-Paying Certifications for 2014", and #8 with Careerealism "Top 10 Professional Certifications For A Bright Future"

Elon Musk's Legacy of Innovative Projects

Elon Reeve Musk is a Canadian-American business magnate, engineer, inventor and investor. He is the CEO and CTO of SpaceX, CEO and product architect of Tesla Motors, and chairman of SolarCity. He was born in South Africa on June 28, 1971

He is well-known as the founder of SpaceX and a co-founder of Zip2, PayPal, and Tesla Motors. He has also envisioned a conceptual high-speed transportation system known as the Hyperloop and has proposed a VTOL supersonic jet aircraft with electric fan propulsion.

Musk was born in Pretoria, Gauteng, South Africa, the son of Maye, a model from Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada; and Errol Musk, a South African-born electromechanical engineer. His paternal grandmother was British, and he also has Pennsylvania Dutch ancestry. After his parents divorced in 1980, Musk lived mostly with his father in locations in South Africa.

At age 10, he discovered computing with the Commodore VIC-20. He taught himself computer programming and at age 12 sold the code for a BASIC-based video game he created called Blastar to a magazine called PC and Office Technology for approximately $500. A web version of the game is available online.

Musk was severely bullied throughout his childhood, and was once hospitalized when a group of boys threw him down a flight of stairs, and then beat him until he blacked out.

Musk was initially educated in private education, attending the English-speaking Waterkloof House Preparatory School. Musk later graduated from Pretoria Boys High School and moved to Canada in June 1989, just before his 18th birthday, after obtaining Canadian citizenship through his Canadian-born mother.

ZIP2
In 1995, Musk and his brother, Kimbal, started Zip2, a web software company, with $28,000 of their father's money. The company developed and marketed an Internet "city guide" for the newspaper publishing industry. Musk obtained contracts with The New York Times and the Chicago Tribune and persuaded the board of directors to abandon plans for a merger with a company called CitySearch. Compaq acquired Zip2 for $307 million in cash and $34 million in stock options in 1999

PayPal
In March 1999, Musk co-founded X.com, an online financial services and e-mail payment company, with $10 million from the sale of Zip2. One year later, the company merged with Confinity which had a money transfer service called PayPal. PayPal's early growth was driven mainly by a viral marketing campaign where new customers were recruited when they received money through the service. In October 2002, PayPal was acquired by eBay for $1.5 billion in stock, of which $165 million was given to Musk

SpaceX
In 2001, Musk conceptualised "Mars Oasis"; a project to land a miniature experimental greenhouse on Mars, containing food crops growing on Martian regolith, in an attempt to regain public interest in space exploration. In October 2001, Musk travelled to Moscow with Jim Cantrell (an aerospace supplies fixer), and Adeo Ressi to buy refurbished ICBMs (Dnepr-1) that could send the envisioned payloads into space. The group met with companies such as NPO Lavochkin and Kosmotras, however "Musk was seen as a novice", was consequently "spat on by one of the Russian chief designers", and the group returned to the US empty-handed. In February 2002, the group returned to Russia to look for three ICBMs, bringing along Mike Griffin, who had worked for the CIA's venture capital arm, In-Q-Tel; NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory; and was just leaving Orbital Sciences, a maker of satellites and spacecraft. According to early Tesla and SpaceX investor Steve Jurvetson, Musk calculated that the raw materials for building a rocket actually were only 3 percent of the sales price of a rocket at the time. By applying vertical integration and the modular approach from software engineering, SpaceX could cut launch price by a factor of ten and still enjoy a 70 percent gross margin.

With $100 million of his early fortune, Musk founded Space Exploration Technologies, or SpaceX, in June 2002. Musk is chief executive officer (CEO) and chief technology officer (CTO) of the Hawthorne, California-based company. In 2006, SpaceX was awarded a contract from NASA to continue the development and test of the SpaceX Falcon 9 launch vehicle and Dragon spacecraft in order to transport cargo to the International Space Station,[58][not in citation given] followed by a $1.6 billion NASA launch contract on December 23, 2008 for 12 flights of its Falcon 9 rocket and Dragon spacecraft to the Space Station, replacing the US Space Shuttle after it retired in 2011.

Tesla Motors
Tesla Motors was incorporated in July 2003 by Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning, who financed the company until the Series A round of funding. Both men played active roles in the company's early development prior to Elon Musk's involvement. Musk led the Series A round of investment in February 2004, joining Tesla's board of directors as its chairman. Musk took an active role within the company and oversaw Roadster product design at a detailed level, but was not deeply involved in day-to-day business operations.

Think Of PMP Certification As Career Insurance

You know you need many kinds of insurance to help protect you and your family as you move through life. Insurance on your home, health insurance, car insurance, life insurance, disability insurance are just a few that come to mind.

We can agree that keep yourself employed is another good goal in life to help protect you and your family. In reality there isn’t a good way to buy insurance that can pay your salary when it comes to being laid off. Unemployment benefits are not something you can really count on beyond just a very short term emergency relief.

So how do you insure a continued employment status? If you make sure you are a valued and necessary employee, that is a good way to “insure” your career.

If you are working in project management you already know that projects are something that have a beginning and an end point. When your project ends does your job end as well? In some case that can be the result.

If you have your PMI Project Management Professional Certification not only do you tend to see a 15 to 17 percent increase in pay you will be much more valuable to your firm. Having your PMP certification is an excellent form of employment insurance.

Having your PMP certification means an increase in job security. Human resources professionals who know about the PMP certification and what it stands for will realize that your being PMP certified does mean that you have project management experience and certification that puts your skill level on par with the best in the field.

While PMI’s processes represent the entirety of what it means to be a certified project manager, PMI’s framework focuses on important aspects of the role. For example, PMI places great emphasis on sticking to processes, and PMI is also keen on breaking down a project into work packages and planning the effort associated with these work packages accordingly.

Research included a large-scale survey of global Project Management Professional (PMP)® certification holders to validate updates to domains, tasks, knowledge, and skills. The RDS captures perspectives of project management practitioners from all industries, work settings, and regions. It serves as the foundation for the PMP exam and ensures its validity and relevance.

Tesla Motors Is Project Management For Today’s World

You have heard that everything old is new again. The electric car has been around since 1828, Ányos Jedlik, a Hungarian who invented an early type of electric motor, created a small model car powered by his new motor. The acid from the wet batteries proved to be a major problem. Scroll forward nearly 180 years and Elon Musk began to put together a team to bring the electric car into the 21st century.
Tesla Motors, Inc. is an automotive and energy storage company that designs, manufactures, and sells electric cars, electric vehicle powertrain components, and battery products. Tesla Motors is a public company that trades on the NASDAQ stock exchange under the symbol TSLA. In the first quarter of 2013, Tesla posted profits for the first time in its history.

Tesla first gained widespread attention following their production of the Tesla Roadster, the first fully electric sports car. The company's second vehicle is the Model S, a fully electric luxury sedan, which was followed by the Model X. Its next vehicle is the Model 3. Global cumulative Model S sales passed 90,000 units by October 2015.

Tesla also markets electric powertrain components, including lithium-ion battery packs to automakers including Daimler and Toyota. CEO Elon Musk has said that he envisions Tesla Motors as an independent automaker, aimed at eventually offering electric cars at prices affordable to the average consumer. Pricing for the Tesla Model 3 is expected to start at $35,000 before any government incentives and deliveries are expected to begin by 2017. Recently, Tesla announced the Powerwall, a battery product for home use. Both a money saving and eco based product that is looking to change how we think of being on or off the energy grid.

The Tesla dream has so many individual components that must be integrated into the manufacturing aspects of the many parts of this endeavor it is a perfect example of how project management is the backbone of progress and innovation.
